Infection Control Nurse

Surveillance:

1. Apply epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies.
2. Conduct on-going surveillance using Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criteria, documentation, and investigation of nosocomial infections through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests, post-discharge surveillance, and autopsy findings.
3. Assess environmental control through surveillance of water supply systems as needed, air pressure relationships for high risk environmental monitoring.
4. Conduct environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas. Collect data on the incidence of selected device use in identified intensive care units.
5. Participate in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infectious Disease Division, county/state public health departments, and when necessary in consultation with the Center for Disease Control. Report epidemiologically significant findings to appropriate customers.
6. Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessary.
7. Report all in-house patients with communicable disease to the county and/or state health department and maintain appropriate records. Compile and interpret surveillance reports to Infection Control committee, specialty areas, and executive medical committee on a regular basis.

Data:

1. Collect data in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the problem and make appropriate recommendations.  Performance Improvement:
2. Participate in quality/performance improvement activities by assessing, monitoring, and measuring nosocomial infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basis.
3. Select indicators based on the projected use of the data. Plan and participate in the budget process.
4. Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Control meetings and dissemination of recommendations hospital-wide.

Education:

1. Plan, organize, develop and implement educational programs for all hospital employees including administrative and ancillary services which convey specialized knowledge and skills to increase employee awareness of existence of nosocomial infections; techniques for avoidance and preventive measures to provide a safe environment for hospital employees and patients.

Exposure:

1. Develop appropriate informational materials at appropriate level of understanding and need.
2. Serve as a knowledgeable and available resource on infection control practices and policies to patients, families, staff, and health system employees.
3. Participate in continuing educational activities at the department, state, and national levels to promote personal growth and maintain a current knowledge base commensurate with latest research and scholarly knowledge.

Regulatory:

1. Maintain compliance with national standards and regulating bodies such as JCAHO, CDC.
2. Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice, rules and regulations. Participate in maintaining policies and procedures which provide for a program of preventive medicine for hospital personnel to include establishment of policies and procedures relating to exposure to infectious diseases and prevention of cross-contamination. Recommend and evaluate procedures or policy statements relating to infection control within NMC Specialty Hospital,; Al Ain maintain an updated reference manual on infectious diseases and hospital infection control as recommended by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals. Maintain a knowledge base of current infection prevention and control information through peer networking. Internet access, published literature and professional meetings.

Infection Control Nurse/Committee Coordinator

Primary Clinical duties:

1. Have responsibility for the monitoring, surveillance, the investigation, prevention and control of Hospital Acquired Infections.
2. Investigate outbreaks of infection both in the hospice and community settings  with particular reference to their source and mode of spread.  Report outbreaks to relevant department.
3. Advise on isolation techniques and supporting line managers in supervising the implementation of such techniques in specific situations.
4. Evaluate regularly prevention/control of infection measures in specific situations with a view  to advising on continuous improvement.
5. Advise Nursing management of individual patients with infectious conditions.
6. Explain laboratory reports relevant to the prevention/control of infection to nursing staff.
7. Collect relevant clinical and epidemiological data to assist the infection control team.
8. Act as specialist advisor to all nursing staff and  other  hospice staff  where  relevant in  matters relating to infection prevention/control.
9. Advise Medical/Nursing personnel regarding patient placement to minimize the spread of infection and the implementation of agreed guidelines in their specific areas.
10. Participate in infection prevention/control and hygiene audits and complete against agreed guidelines.
11. Provide feedback and support staff in developing and implementation of  actions  plans where necessary.
12. Articulate and represent patient interest in collaboration with the interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary team.
13. Communicate, negotiate and represent patient values and decisions in collaboration with other professionals.
14. Disseminate education to patients on infection control practices.
15. Actively promote best practice through infection prevention and control committees, health promotion resources, and public awareness.

 Administrative duties:

1. Convenes meeting of the PCI Committee at least monthly.
2. Prepares and distributes agendas to all members of the PCI Committee, and others as appropriate, at least two days prior to the meeting.
3. Records and distributes minutes of the meetings of PCI Committee:
4. Obtains approval of minutes from Chair of PCI committee.
5. Formal minutes will be circulated to all members of the Infection Control    Committee and others as appropriate.
6. Minutes will reflect decisions taken, recommendations made, status of activities in progress, and implementation status of recommendations.

1. Report and maintain copies of the minutes of meetings, surveillance data, analysis, audits, reports, worksheets and other data.
2. Distributes pertinent information to members of the PCI Committee.

1. Graduate of accredited school on nursing.
2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
3. Three years of experience as a Registered Nurse. Prefer at least one year of experience or additional course work or certification in infection control.
4. Current license in country of origin with DOH license as a RN in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi
5. Preferably with a National Certification in Infection Control or its equivalent.
6. Must display a neat, clean, professional appearance.
7. Must understand importance of and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
8. Exhibit an attitude, which promotes harmony and goodwill among patients, caregivers, and co-workers.
9. Must communicates clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
10.  Must communicate in a timely manner.
11. Must be able to listens effectively to patient, caregivers, co-workers, and supervisor.
12. Must participate in weekly and monthly on call schedule.
